Who can have a Transplant?

Many people who have kidney failure can choose to have a transplant. You may become a candidate after completing an evaluation with the transplant team. The evaluation assesses the risks and benefits of a transplant. Some patients have greater risk than others. Higher risk groups may include patients who may have other medical conditions or complications, or those who are going to be transplanted for the second or third time.

Today, due to the many advances in the field of transplantation, there are fewer reasons why you may not be a candidate for a new kidney. Conditions that may keep you from receiving a new kidney are: an active infection, cancer, severe medical conditions with your heart, lungs or stomach, as well as some kidney diseases. These concerns can be addressed by your transplant nephrologist. But even those at high risk may become a candidate. Once the team has determined you are a good candidate, the final decision is yours.
